Can I have a pregnancy test?

If your period should have started and hasn't, we can do a pregnancy test. The test should work from the first day your period is due, but will not be accurate earlier than this day. If your period is irregular it may be hard to tell when the first day is, but we are happy to test you, and can always retest you later

What if I'm pregnant?

If you are pregnant, and you know you want an abortion, the nurse will talk this through with you and can arrange for you to be referred to a hospital for a termination. You can also have counselling at OTR, either to help you decide what you want to do, or after the termination, if this feels helpful.

I think I need emergency contraception

Emergency contraception (morning after pill) should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex (or if a condom breaks) – or within 72 hours at the latest. Only the nurse can give it out, but if you can't make the clinic in time, phone us for alternatives or see our links page.

I think I have a sexually transmitted infection (STI)

Some STIs can cause soreness or discharge. Others, like chlamydia , can have no symptoms at all, but if left untreated it can damage your reproductive system and leave you infertile. We can test you for chlamydia, which (like all STIs) is very easy to treat with antibiotics. If you have any worries at all about having caught an STI, it is worth getting a check up. You can talk to our nurse about where to go for other tests.

Can I get free contraceptives?

If you're having sex and don't want you or your partner to get pregnant or catch an STI, you need to make sure you have a regular supply of contraceptives. Our nurse usually gives out condoms as well as the pill, because while the pill will stop you from getting pregnant, only condoms will protect you from STIs.

I'm having problems with my boyfriend/girlfriend

The nurse will be happy to talk to you about any emotional or sexual problems you may be having. She may also refer you to a counsellor at OTR if you feel it would be helpful to have more time to talk
